Ellen's Story
I can’t pinpoint the exact age when my symptoms started.
My periods in my teens were pretty normal to begin with however from my late teens I started to get a lot of IBS style symptoms which I just assumed everyone had to some degree and ignored them.
I had episodes throughout my 20’s where I would be bent double in pain & this could happen anywhere which was hard when it was in public. They would subside after 10 mins or so, but they were quite overwhelming & the pain so intense.
I first went to the doctor when I lived in the UK to try & explain the symptoms. She quickly put it down to IBS. I returned a few times explaining the symptoms only to be asked was I experiencing a lot of stress in my life & subsequently having to fill out a mental health quiz to assess if I needed anti-depressants.
When I returned to Ireland aged 28, I met an amazing doctor …
